Got a pain in the neck? Your desk (not a cranky customer) may be to blame

Don’t blame that cranky customer for the pain in your neck. The cause may be your desk.

Many contact center agents have their work spaces set up in ways that cause aches, pains and kinks, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) warns.

Here are OSHA tips on setting up a comfortable work area:

  • Keep the supplies you use the most in front of your body so you can easily reach them without twisting from your torso.
  • Adjust your chair so your elbows hang normally when typing or on the phone and your upper legs are parallel to the floor.
  • Tilt your computer monitor so it is about 20 degrees below horizontal eye level. You want to see it completely without looking up or leaning forward.
  • Use headsets for extended phone use.
  • Keep your wrists straight while typing, and use an adjustable mouse support that’s even with the keyboard and is easy to reach while typing.
