You can learn a lot about a person from just a handshake. Here’s how to decode what customers or colleagues are thinking.
They might have this on their minds …
- “I’ll take my time before I figure out if I like you or not” if the person keeps his arm stiff so a good amount of distance remains between you and him. What you should do: Say things to establish trust and develop the relationship.
- “I’m interested in what you have to say” if the person offers her hand with the palm facing up. It indicates she wants to make you comfortable. What you should do: Offer that handshake to others, also.
- “Hear me out” if the person offers his hand angled toward the floor. He wants the upper hand. What you should do: Keep your ears open.
- “We’re equals” if the person clasps your hand straight on with a wide open palm. What you should do: The same. It’s a great way to kick off a relationship.
